Dubai Metro Blue Line will link key growth areas and will include the city’s first crossing over the Dubai Creek
Plans for the Dubai Metro Blue Line date back nearly two decades, but the project is now firmly back on track as one of the city’s most ambitious transport expansions, designed to serve fast-growing residential and academic districts across Dubai.
Here’s everything we know so far about the Dubai Metro Blue Line
Backstory
The Dubai Metro Blue Line was first discussed back in 2006, along with other potential lines and the expansion of the existing Red and Green lines. Plans changed amid the global economic slowdown, but now… the huge project is back on track.
Dubai Metro Blue Line Route Map
The above map was shared by the Dubai Media Office in November 2023, giving us an idea of what route the Blue Line will follow when it is operational.
The Blue Line will connect to:
- Centrepoint Station on the Red Line
- Creek Station on the Green Line
From Centrepoint, the line will pass through Mirdif, Al Warqa, International City 1, 2 and 3, Dubai Silicon Oasis, and end at Dubai International Academic City.
From Creek, it will extend through Dubai Festival City and Dubai Creek Harbour before heading towards Ras Al Khor Industrial Area. Both branches meet at International City 1, creating a key interchange station.

The Dubai Metro Blue Line is also a major engineering project. Around 15.5km of the route will run underground, reaching depths of up to 70 metres. Five of the 14 planned stations will be fully underground, while the rest will combine elevated and surface-level designs.
The line also includes a dedicated metro bridge over Dubai Creek, introducing a permanent rail crossing in this part of the city for the first time.
Impact: connectivity and daily life
Once operational, the Blue Line will significantly improve access to Dubai International Airport for residents in nine surrounding areas. It will also benefit students and workers in Dubai International Academic City and Dubai Silicon Oasis, reducing reliance on buses, taxis, and private cars.
The project is expected to serve up to one million residents and reduce road congestion by around 20%.
Latest update
In May 2026, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum inaugurated tunnelling works on the Dubai Metro Blue Line. The project brings together around 10,000 engineers and workers, highlighting the scale and pace of construction currently underway.
The total project cost is estimated at 20.5 billion dirhams.

Timeline: when will it begin operations?
The Dubai Metro Blue Line is scheduled to begin operations on September 9, 2029, marking exactly 20 years since the original Dubai Metro launch on September 9, 2009.
The date is positioned as a symbolic milestone for the city’s transport evolution.

The line includes a dedicated metro bridge over Dubai Creek, creating a permanent rail connection across one of Dubai’s most historic waterways.
The tallest metro station in the world
The first station on the Blue Line, Emaar Properties Metro Station, had its foundation stone laid in June 2025. It will carry naming rights for ten years from launch.

Looking ahead: Dubai’s wider rail future
The Blue Line is part of a broader expansion of Dubai’s transport network. In April 2026, the Dubai Metro Gold Line was also approved, set to become the emirate’s largest sustainable transport project. It will span 42km with 18 stations and run fully underground, further strengthening connectivity across the city.
