Upgrades across Umm Suqeim, Al Wasl, Al Safa and Jumeirah Street aim to reduce travel times, boost capacity and improve traffic flow
Dubai is set for another major traffic upgrade with plans in place to overhaul Umm Suqeim Street, Al Wasl Road, Al Safa Street and key intersections along Jumeirah Street. The project is designed to support Dubai’s continued growth, keep pace with its expanding population, and make getting around the city smoother and more enjoyable for residents and visitors alike.

Speaking on the project, His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, of the Roads and Transport Authority noted that the project will serve vital areas featuring a wide range of modern tourism facilities, including beaches, hotels, fine-dining restaurants, residential areas, educational institutions, centres for tourism, arts and sports activities and events, as well as residential and commercial districts.
He said, “The development of vital corridors enhances the efficiency of the traffic network, reduces journey times and improves traffic flow, with a positive impact on individual productivity and the efficiency of various economic sectors.”

Umm Suqeim Street
The project extends from the intersection with Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road, and forms part of the comprehensive plan to develop Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra corridor. It will enhance connectivity across four corridors: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road.
Highlights:
- Upgrades to six major intersections, four bridges and two tunnels
- Capacity will increase to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions
- Journey time will decrease from 20 minutes to 6 minutes
- Will serve several residential and development areas, including Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Manara, Al Sufouh, Umm Al Sheif, Al Barsha and Al Quoz

Al Wasl Road
Al Wasl Road Development will extend a massive 15km from its intersection with Umm Suqeim Street to 2nd December Street.
Upgrades will be made to seven intersections along Al Wasl Road with Al Thanya Street, Al Manara Street, Umm Al Sheif Street, Umm Amara Street, Al Urouba Street, Al Hudaiba Street and 2nd December Street to enhance traffic flow including the widening of roads from two lanes to three lanes in each direction.
The construction of five tunnels will cut journey time along Al Wasl Road by 50% and increase capacity from 8,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Highlights:
- A unidirectional tunnel at the intersection of Al Wasl Road and Al Manara Street with three lanes branching into two routes: two lanes from Sheikh Zayed Road towards Jumeirah Street, and two lanes from Sheikh Zayed Road towards Umm Suqeim Street, with a capacity of 4,800 vehicles per hour
- A 650 meter tunnel will be constructed on Umm Al Sheif Street with two lanes from Sheikh Zayed Road towards Jumeirah Street and a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour
- A 605 meter unidirectional tunnel will be constructed at the intersection of Al Wasl Road and Umm Amara Street towards 2nd December Street, with 2 lanes and a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour
- A 565 metre unidirectional tunnel will be built at the intersection of Al Wasl Road and Al Urouba Street towards Jumeirah Street, with 2 lanes and a capacity of 1,400 vehicles per hour

Al Safa Street
The Al Safa Street Development Project will extend 1,500 metres from Sheikh Zayed Road to its intersection with Al Wasl Road.
It includes road widening, junction improvements and traffic signal upgrades. The project will cut journey time on Al Safa Street from 12 minutes to just three with an increased car capacity from 6,000 to 12,000 in both directions.
Additionally, it includes the construction of two bridges and two tunnels.
- The first will serve traffic from Al Wasl Road towards Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street featuring four lanes with an estimated capacity of 6,400 vehicles per hour
- The second bridge will serve traffic from Al Satwa Street towards Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street featuring two lanes with a capacity of 2,800 vehicles per hour
- The first tunnel will serve traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street towards Al Wasl Road featuring two lanes and a capacity of 3,200 per hour
- The second will be located at the intersection of Al Wasl Road and Al Safa Street featuring two lanes in each direction with a capacity of 6,400 vehicles per hour in both directions
The project will also widen the street from three lanes to four in each direction, as well as pedestrian upgrades, cycling paths, urban spaces and landscaping.

Jumeirah Street
The project will also upgrade seven intersections along Jumeirah Street, including Al Thanya Street, Al Manara Street, Umm Al Sheif Street, Al Urouba Street, 39B Street, Al Hudaiba Street and 2nd December Street.
The improvements focus on boosting capacity, easing traffic flow along the corridor and reducing congestion at key junctions.
