Unstable weather across the UAE isn’t over just yet…

After several days of heavy rain and thunderstorms across the country, weather conditions are expected to intensify over the coming days, with forecasters warning of stronger winds, heavier downpours and even a rare tornado risk.

What’s happening right now

Rain has already swept across much of the UAE this week, with heavy showers, thunder and lightning reported in areas including Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah.

Dubai, Khor Fakkan, Kalba, Dibba Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Hatta have also seen moderate to heavy rainfall.

Some areas have recorded significant rainfall levels, with parts of Abu Dhabi and Ajman receiving close to a year’s worth of rain in just one day.

When will it peak?

According to the National Centre of Meteorology, unsettled weather will continue through Wednesday before peaking on Thursday night into Friday morning.

A powerful low-pressure system moving across the region is driving the conditions, bringing:

  • Heavy rain at times
  • Strong winds
  • Thunderstorms
  • Reduced visibility in places

Rain is expected to begin in the west before spreading across the country overnight and into Friday.

  • Possible disruptions to travel

Authorities remain on alert as conditions develop.

Is there really a tornado risk?

According to The National News – while rare, international forecasters have not ruled out the possibility of isolated tornadoes forming as part of this system. The combination of strong winds, instability and thunderstorms means the “ingredients” for a tornado could be present.
