Schools all over the UAE are currently distance learning, with students remaining at home to partake in online classes

With students and teachers continuing to distance learn until April 17, the ADEK (Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge) has introduced a framework for parents, teachers and students to follow while this type of learning continues and campuses remain closed. The guidelines are to maintain consistency, education quality and student wellbeing throughout times where distance learning is a must.

ADEK has divided the rules and responsibilities into two categories, one for schools and one for parents to follow.

School responsibilities for distance learning in UAE

  • Your child’s wellbeing comes first with continued PE sessions (a minimum of 45 minutes per week) and regular wellbeing check-ins (at least once per week)

  • Schools are responsible for teaching; not parents (exceptions for KG students which require parent support).

  • A clear and structured daily timetable with a mix of live sessions, independent learning, and mandatory screen-free breaks is shared with parents.

  • School communication is clear and predictable, using a single channel and defined contact times that respect parents’ schedules.

  • Daily attendance is recorded, and students who are absent or do not log in are followed up with through official school channels.

Parent responsibilities for distance learning in UAE

  • You don’t need to teach, or supervise your child’s screen time (beyond KG), they are guided by their teachers

  • Support your child’s environment with a consistent routine, access to a device, and a quiet space, while teachers are responsible for delivering and supporting the learning

  • Focus on their wellbeing by ensuring they rest, stay active for at least 30 minutes daily, and remain supported and connected with family and friends.

  • Stay informed through a single primary school communication channel to manage expectations around your child’s upcoming requirements.

  • Be mindful of your child’s teachers and support them with any inquiries, allowing them time to respond through appropriate channels and within working hours
