From staying indoors to avoiding flood-prone areas

After days of heavy rain and thunderstorms across the UAE, weather conditions are expected to intensify, with forecasters warning of stronger winds, heavier downpours and even a rare tornado risk.

By Thursday evening, March 26, heavy rainfall will build across Abu Dhabi before spreading nationwide. Forecasters have warned of hail in some areas, damaging wind gusts, flash flooding in low-lying areas and possible disruptions to travel. The rainy weather conditions are expected to last until midday Friday.

Are we expecting a tornado? According to The National News, while rare, international forecasters have not ruled out the possibility of isolated tornadoes forming as part of this system. The combination of strong winds, instability and thunderstorms means the “ingredients” for a tornado could be present.

During this time, here are the safety tips laid out by the NCEMA to follow to protect your personal safety and reduce risks.

  1. Monitor weather forecasts: Scan weather reports to be aware of the latest updates so you won’t get caught unprepared.
  2. Seek shelter: NCEMA recommend staying indoors in a secure, enclosed spaces to avoid the risk of lightening strikes
  3. Avoid open areas: Don’t go out into open spaces such as parks, fields or bodies of water during thunderstorms, as the risk of being hit by lightning increases in such areas.
  4. Stay away from metal objects: Metallic options such as electric poles, fences and umbrellas, as this exposes you to lightning strikes.
  5. Do not use phones: Avoid using phones during thunderstorms, as lightning can damage devices and can pose an injury to users.
  6. Secure outdoor furniture: Secure outdoor furniture and moveable items, or bring them indoors to prevent damage.
  7. Stay away from water sources: Avoid going near bodies of water as lightning can cause electrical currents.
  8. Prepare emergency supplies: Have flashlights, spare batteries, food and water prepared in case of power outages or other emergencies.
