Following heavy storms and weather alerts, Dubai braces for a cold front
Residents received public safety alerts from Dubai Police at around 7pm on Thursday December 20, urging people to stay home until midday on Friday, December 19, as heavy weather and rain lashed parts of the city overnight.
Unsettled weather swept across Dubai and parts of the UAE on Thursday evening, bringing rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms. With safety as a priority, Emirates confirmed that several flights were cancelled, delayed, or retimed due to the conditions, advising passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
The city also felt the impact on the ground, with several popular outdoor attractions temporarily closing as a precaution. Many offices shifted to remote working on Friday, as residents were encouraged to limit travel and stay off the roads where possible.
Since then, conditions have improved: outdoor attractions have reopened, and Emirates operations have resumed as normal.
Despite rain being relatively rare in Dubai, and sometimes intensified by cloud seeding – the sudden downpour had residents on high alert.

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has reported that temperatures are set to drop over the coming days, with overnight lows expected to dip to around 10°C. So don’t pack those jumpers away just yet.
