Instagram is changing, but it will only affect some accounts in the UAE
Big changes are coming to Instagram in the UAE, as the platform expands its Teen Accounts feature with stricter, age-appropriate content settings across the MENA region. If you’ve got teens glued to their screens (so… most parents), here’s what you need to know.
A safer default for teens
At the heart of the update is a new 13+ content rating system, inspired by parental feedback and designed to make the app safer from the get-go.
Teens under 18 will now automatically be placed into this updated setting, meaning they’ll see content that aligns with stricter, age-appropriate guidelines by default. And importantly, they won’t be able to switch it off without a parent’s permission.
While the aim is to filter out harmful or mature content, Instagram acknowledges that – much like age-rated films or TV – some mild suggestive content or strong language may still occasionally appear. The goal? To make those instances as rare as possible.
What content is being restricted in Instagram UAE for teen accounts?
Instagram is doubling down on its content policies for teens. Alongside existing restrictions on things like explicit content and alcohol promotion, the updated guidelines will now also limit:
- Posts with strong language
- Certain risky stunts
- Content that could encourage harmful behaviour
- Posts showing things like marijuana paraphernalia
In short, teens should see a much “cleaner” version of the app.
Stronger protections across the platform
The update also brings tighter controls across multiple parts of the platform:
- Accounts: Teens won’t be able to follow or interact with accounts that regularly share inappropriate content. These accounts also won’t be able to contact teens.
- Search: More mature search terms – including things like alcohol or graphic content – will be blocked, even if misspelled.
- Content experience: Inappropriate content will be filtered out of Explore, Reels, Feed, Stories, comments, and even links sent via DMs.
- AI features: Instagram’s AI tools will now follow the same age-appropriate guidelines when interacting with teens.
Introducing ‘Limited Content’ mode
For parents who want even more control, there’s a new stricter setting called Limited Content.
This goes a step further by filtering out additional content and even removing teens’ ability to see, leave, or receive comments on posts – offering a more locked-down experience.
Rolling out now
The updated Teen Account settings are already being rolled out gradually across the MENA region, including the UAE, with full implementation expected in the coming months.
