Dubai Walk begins as the city sets out to reshape how we move through it
Dubai Walk has officially started, with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) awarding the first contract under its plan to build more than 6,000km of walkways across the emirate. The first phase begins in Al Ras, marking the starting point for a wider shift towards a more walkable city.
Shorter trips
At the core of Dubai Walk is a push towards a more connected city, where daily life is easier to navigate on foot. The wider plan supports Dubai’s 20-minute city vision, aiming to bring essential services within closer reach. It’s a shift towards making walking a more realistic option across different neighbourhoods.
Al Ras leads the way
The first phase focuses on Al Ras, one of Dubai’s oldest districts. The project will introduce 12km of pedestrian walkways and 5km of cycling tracks, while keeping the area’s historic character intact. Upgrades will include wider pavements, shaded walkways, seating areas and clearer navigation, all designed to work with the district’s existing architecture.

How it all connects
A key part of the project is how it links into public transport. The Al Ras walkways will connect to 11 metro, bus and marine stations, making it easier to move between different parts of the city. Across the wider Dubai Walk network, smart navigation tools and real-time updates are expected to support smoother journeys.
Adding culture into the mix
Alongside infrastructure, the project will introduce 10 creative spaces in Al Ras, developed with local artists. Expect public art, lighting and cultural elements that highlight the area’s heritage.
Where it goes from here
The first phase will run until 2027, focusing on high-impact areas before expanding further across the city. By 2040, the goal is to increase walking and soft mobility trips to 25 per cent.
