This Yas Bay Mexican brunch is loud, lively and made for dancing, with tacos, ceviche and a party atmosphere

Barbossa is a Mexican restaurant that doesn’t do subtle. It’s loud in colour, big on energy and sits right on the Yas Bay waterfront, where the cocktails catch the light and the mood feels permanently upbeat. It’s fun, flirty and clearly here for a good time. I came to see what the fuss was about at their legendary brunch, and from the moment you walk in, it’s clear this is more fiesta than formality.

The Vibe

Plenty of places in Abu Dhabi do brunch, but Barbossa plays a different game. It is bright, bold and playful, yet really comes alive as the sun dips and the volume goes up. Dancers move through the room, a live saxophonist weaves between tables, and a DJ keeps the tempo just right. Before you know it, brunch has turned into a full-blown daytime party.

The Food and Drinks

This is a sharing table kind of affair, and you should arrive hungry. We started with guac and chips. Crispy tortilla chips, proper homemade guacamole, jalapeños and salsa that made it impossible to stop dipping. The Baja salad was fresh and satisfying, with grilled corn, beans, avocado and a light agave sherry dressing that kept everything balanced. The flautas were crunchy and comforting, stuffed with shredded chicken and finished with sour cream, salsa verde, cotija and a punchy salsa de arbol. The trio ceviche was a highlight. Salmon crudo, shrimp aguachile and a tropical coconut ceviche, all fresh and bright and perfect with the house-made tortilla chips. The tuna tostada followed, layered with avocado, salsa macha, mayo and crisp celery for texture.

For mains, the trio of tacos lets you sample the best of the menu. Al pastor chicken, carne asada and Baja shrimp, all generously filled and served with proper salsas and Mexican rice. The signature fajitas arrive sizzling and dramatic, loaded with chicken, beef, shrimp and mushrooms, plus all the extras you want. The garlic-spiced salmon was rich and satisfying, grilled well and finished with brown butter, charred lemon and homemade corn tortillas.

Dessert was churros done right. Warm, crisp, rolled in cinnamon sugar and dunked into chocolate sauce without a hint of restraint. Cocktails keep the mood high. The mezcal paloma is smoky and refreshing. Margaritas come in every flavour worth considering, but the mango version is the one to order. Aperol spritzes flow easily if you want something lighter between dances.

The Service

Friendly, upbeat and always smiling, even as the room fills and the energy climbs.

Fast the night before and skip breakfast. This brunch is generous, lively and unapologetically indulgent. Wear comfortable shoes because once the sax starts and the DJ takes over, you will want to dance.
