A major milestone as air taxis move closer to reality in Dubai
Dubai is a step closer to launching flying taxis, with the completion of its first dedicated air taxi station.
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum recently reviewed the facility near Dubai International Airport, marking a key milestone in the city’s push to bring aerial transport into everyday life.
“The development of advanced air mobility infrastructure reflects our commitment to shaping the future of transportation and enhancing quality of life in Dubai,” Sheikh Hamdan said during the visit.
The purpose-built site – often referred to as a vertiport – is designed specifically for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the technology behind Dubai’s upcoming air taxi network. Set to launch commercially in 2026, the service is expected to dramatically cut travel times across the city. Journeys that typically take around 45 minutes by car – such as from the airport to Palm Jumeirah – could be reduced to around 10 to 12 minutes by air.
The DXB vertiport is the first of several planned locations across Dubai. Initial routes are expected to connect key hubs including Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah, forming part of a wider network that will integrate with existing transport systems.
Inside, the station is designed with both efficiency and passenger experience in mind. Alongside dedicated take-off and landing areas, the facility includes charging infrastructure for electric aircraft, as well as climate-controlled passenger spaces and integrated access points for onward travel.
According to officials, the vertiport is expected to handle thousands of passengers daily once fully operational, underlining the scale of Dubai’s ambitions for urban air mobility.
The project is being developed by the Roads and Transport Authority, alongside aviation companies including Joby Aviation and Skyports Infrastructure.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General of the RTA, described the project as “a key step towards integrating advanced air mobility into Dubai’s transport ecosystem,” adding that it supports the emirate’s long-term vision for sustainable and innovative mobility solutions.
While the concept still feels futuristic, progress has been steady, with further testing and regulatory approvals underway ahead of the planned 2026 launch.
For now, the completion of the first station signals that the infrastructure is starting to catch up with the ambition.
