There are many schools in the UAE, so it can be hard to choose which one you should be sending your little one to, however to make it easier the various education departments in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, each have ratings for each school in the UAE according to various categories, so what exactly does it mean?

Dubai school ratings

The KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority) of Dubai rates schools using a five-point scale: Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak. The grades are given after inspections which often occur yearly, and reflect various factors including teaching quality, student progress, wellbeing, leadership and inclusivity. Schools are also rated on attendance percentage.

Abu Dhabi ratings

The ADEK (Department of Education and Knowledge) of Abu Dhabi rates schools using a six-point scale: Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak, Very Weak. Similarly to Dubai, inspections are done yearly and reports include sections on academic progress, curriculum, personal development, and school environment.

Sharjah ratings

The SPEA (Sharjah Private Education Authority) rates schools using a six-point scale like Abu Dhabi: Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak, Very Weak. Similarly to Dubai and Abu Dhabi inspections are done yearly and reports include sections on teaching quality, leadership, child protection, and student achievement.

What is BSO inspection for British schools?

British Schools Overseas also inspect schools to maintain a high standard of education and to measure how close the education is to a UK standard. These ratings are often voluntary for a British school in the UAE however it is an additional way to measure performance.
