The museum is the final jewel set in Saadiyat’s Cultural District, and it’s almost ready to open its doors

Saadiyat Island’s Cultural District is about to welcome its final masterpiece: the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. The capital’s vibrant cultural hub already boasts the Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and the Zayed National Museum. Soon, residents and visitors alike will have the chance to explore yet another world-class institution when the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opens its doors.

Curious for updates, we dug deep – scanning every Google hit and scrolling through the latest Instagram reels. The official website displays a simple message, “Guggenheim Abu Dhabi” in Arabic and English, with a “Coming Soon” message.

When it does open, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be just the fourth museum in the world to bear the Guggenheim name. It joins the flagship Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy.

Guggenheim museums are renowned for having distinct, iconic architecture at each location rather than a unified style. Each building is designed as a masterpiece to reflect its local context. Renderings of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi showcase the masterful architectural vision of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry.

Gehry was also the architect behind the Guggenheim Bilbao (pictured above), selected for his ability to create transformative cultural landmarks. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi was his primary and only major project in the UAE. Sadly, Gehry passed away in December 2025, meaning he will not see his creation brought to life.

But the project is well underway, and our search uncovered photos of a construction site that matches his vision.

Soon, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will transform the concrete grey into an exterior boldly composed of steel in shades of silver and gold, concrete, wood, and glass. The groundbreaking, avant-garde architecture stands apart from the stark white facades of its neighbouring cultural landmarks, echoing the golden dunes of the desert. The design even incorporates traditional and sustainable elements within the design, such as wind towers and covered courtyards, blending modern architecture with a nod to local heritage.

It represents an inventive 21st-century museum design introducing a different visitor experience and an innovative way to view contemporary art. With a surface area of approximately 30,000 square metres, the museum in Abu Dhabi will be the largest Guggenheim in the world, strengthening the UAE’s capital position as a global centre for arts and culture.

Inside the cluster of asymmetrical cones and geometric forms, Domus – a prestigious international architectural magazine from Milan – states the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will house an art and technology centre, galleries for special exhibitions, permanent collections, an education centre and theatre, archives, a library, a research centre, and a restoration laboratory.

The official Guggenheim website offers further insight. It states that the museum in Abu Dhabi is inspired by expansive industrial studio spaces, a design that reflects the large scale at which many contemporary artists work and presents unconventional gallery layouts.

When the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi was first announced, Abu Dhabi Culture stated that the museum will have “a special emphasis on West Asian, North African and South Asian art” and will demonstrate “the interconnected nature of today’s art world, where cross-cultural sources of inspiration and transcultural exchange have become the norm.”

Exhibitions at Guggenheim will be curated around the work of individual artists, the histories of various art movements, and grand themes with pieces from multiple artists across time and space.

The most important question of all: When is Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opening? No official opening date has been announced, but with construction moving rapidly, a visit could be possible by the end of 2026.

For now, we can glimpse at the museum’s progress from just outside the Louvre Abu Dhabi… and wait.
