Expats with expired visas get a smooth return to the UAE
If you’ve been abroad with expired visas, here’s the good news: the UAE is letting expats come back without needing a new entry permit. For a limited one-month window, getting home is simpler, and you can take care of your residency once you touch down.
Who can benefit?
This temporary rule, announced by theFederal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP), applies to residents whose expired visas have been affected while they were abroad. If your visa ran out and you couldn’t make it back in time, you now have a clear path home.
When does it apply?
The initiative is valid from February 28 until March 31, so timing is key for those with expired visas. Authorities have introduced this one-month window in response to exceptional circumstances that kept some residents from returning on time.

How it works
Eligible expats can travel back to the UAE without obtaining a new entry permit. Upon arrival, you’ll need to regularise your residency status through standard procedures. Essentially, you’re back in the country first, paperwork follows.
The bigger picture
This measure reflects the UAE’s continued support for its expat community. It shows a practical and responsive approach to administrative processes, especially during exceptional circumstances.
Good to know
If you’re planning a return, check your eligibility, book your flight, and prepare to complete the residency procedures after arrival. This one-month window makes it easy to return to the UAE and handle your status on arrival.
