Traffic in Dubai is about to get better

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has begun rolling out a series of rapid traffic solutions across eight key locations in the emirate, as part of a wider 2026 strategy that includes more than 45 traffic enhancements. The aim? Smoother traffic flow, safer roads and a more efficient network to keep up with Dubai’s ever-growing population and rising vehicle numbers.

The works are already underway at several areas including

  • Emirates Road from Sharjah towards Wadi Al Amardi Street
  • Umm Amara Street from Sheikh Zayed Road towards Al Wasl Street
  • Jebel Ali–Lehbab Street
  • the area between Sama Al Jaddaf and Al Jaddaf Waterfront near Al Jaddaf Metro Station
  • Al Na’ayat Street in Al Barsha 1
  • Al Maktoum School in Al Satwa
  • the intersection of Al Ittihad Street and Al Quds Street
  • and Sheikh Rashid Street near Grand Hyatt Dubai towards Bur Dubai

Once complete, the upgrades are expected to reduce congestion and cut journey times by between 15% and 30% in the affected areas – a welcome improvement for daily commuters and school-run regulars alike.

So what’s actually changing?

Plans include widening selected roads from one lane to two, converting roundabouts into intersections with traffic lights, and creating new road links to better connect residential neighbourhoods with main roads. There will also be junction upgrades, extra parking spaces at schools and other facilities, and traffic safety improvements.

According to the RTA, each upgrade is guided by detailed traffic studies and data analysis. Road performance is continuously monitored through traffic control centres, while field inspection teams assess conditions on the ground to pinpoint congestion hotspots and recommend practical solutions.

In short: if your daily drive passes through one of these areas, relief could soon be on the way. Unless you decide to skip all traffic and fly over it instead with the upcoming Air Taxis
