Sobremesa is Downtown’s newest Mexican escape
The new Sobremesa is the kind of spot you’ll book again before you’ve even paid the bill and here’s why…
The spot
Set inside Souk Al Bahar in Downtown, Sobremesa is a homegrown Mexican and Spanish restaurant and bar that feels like a little escape from the hustle of Dubai.
We grabbed a table outside and honestly? It’s such a peaceful pocket of the Souk. You’re not crammed in between crowds, you’re slightly tucked away, and it just feels calm. The kind of place where you can properly switch off, settle in, and take your time. Relaxed, low-key, no rush. Exactly what you want for a long lunch that turns into “should we just order one more thing?”
The vibe is easy, warm and unfussy, nothing over the top, just good energy and a space that lets the food do the talking.
The food
We went fully sharing style, which is 100% the move here. Order a bunch of starters, pass plates around, try a bit of everything. It’s that kind of menu.
Now let’s talk standouts…
First: the Mexican-style street corn (Dhs45). And I know what you’re thinking, it’s corn. We’ve all had corn. But this is the corn you’ll be thinking about days later. A whole grilled cob, juicy and smoky, covered in chipotle mayo and then sprinkled generously with cheese. It’s creamy, slightly spicy, messy in the best way… and one of those dishes you genuinely don’t want to end. Booking your next table level good.
Then the churros (Dhs40). Again, I thought I knew what was coming. The usual sticks, dip, done. Well, this arrives like a full dessert moment. Served high on a plate in a spiral, almost like a churro cake, coated in cinnamon sugar, topped with vanilla ice cream and drizzled in chocolate. It’s the churros I’ll forever compare other churros to.
But everything else held its own too. The guacamole (Dhs40) was a great start, the seabass ceviche (Dhs80) was super fresh and wrapped into crisp lettuce, that crunch with the citrusy flavours were perfect. And the grilled chicken tacos (Dhs60) were packed with flavour. On the drinks side, the standout was the Needles mocktail (Dhs55), made with nopal cactus (yes, from the aloe vera plant), apple and soda. So refreshing. The waiter actually explained how they make it, which made it even more interesting. We also tried the Señorita (Dhs60), strawberry, basil shrub and 0% sparkling wine with a touch of bitter. Light, fresh and perfect with the food.

The service
Attentive without hovering, super friendly, and they really know their stuff. They explained ingredients, told us how certain dishes were made, and gave great recommendations.
What’s On the Bill
Starters from around Dhs40, with sharing plates mostly sitting between Dhs40 and Dhs80. Mocktails around Dhs55 to 60. It’s very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes, especially if you go sharing style.
What’s On verdict
Sobremesa is relaxed, full of flavour and genuinely fun. Go for the corn. Stay for the churros. Order everything in between. It’s peaceful, it’s different, and it’s the kind of spot you’ll want to bring friends back to just so you can say, “Trust me… you need to try this.”
