The future is here
The World Government Summit is currently underway in Dubai, bringing with it a wave of major announcements. From the revealed locations of the Dubai Loop megaproject to the 2030 Blue and Green Spaces Roadmap and Glydways, a new autonomous electric vehicle, the updates keep coming. And now, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, shared a video of himself riding in a self-driving car.
Take a look at the video below:
Faz3, popularly known as Fazza captioned the video, ‘Hands off. Future on.’ with the hashtag #SelfDrivingCar
In the video, Sheikh Hamdan is seen in the passenger seat of the self-driving vehicle on the King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street.
Sheikh Hamdan is recording the road before panning to the steering wheel of the self-driving vehicle as it turns to enter Souk Madinat Jumeirah. The vehicle then asks the Crown Prince, ‘Your Highness, can I have a selfie with you?’ to which Sheikh Hamdan replied, ‘Yes, of course.’
Shortly after we hear a tune before the car announces that it will be arriving at the destination. It says, ‘We are arriving soon; please take all your belongings and wait for the vehicle to stop.’
In the back, we can also spot His Excellency Matar Al Tayer, Director General of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), and another passenger.
Driverless taxis were announced by Sheikh Hamdan back in 2021 and are expected to significantly improve road safety levels, as over 90 per cent of accidents are due to human errors. The vehicles are all-electric, environmentally friendly, and capable of serving a wide range of clients from different community segments, including seniors and people of determination.
Would you use it to get to your destination?
