Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority unveils futuristic autonomous vehicles that could transform city travel

Traffic is on every driver’s mind these days, and beyond upgrading infrastructure and implementing smart solutions, Dubai is continuously working to make the city one of the world’s most liveable.

During the World Governments Summit 2026, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) unveiled a new futuristic project: Glydways – an autonomous electric vehicle that can drive on dedicated tracks, skipping all the traffic.

Here’s what we know so far about Glydways

In an official post on its social media, RTA revealed details about Glydways.

It will run on narrow, dedicated tracks, transporting passengers from one part of the city to the other.

Each Glydways can transport four to six passengers and can travel at speeds of 50km/h with a range of 250km/h.

According to the Road and Transport Authority, it can transport over 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction.

It is a part of RTA’s plans to further enhance the quality of life and mobility for both residents and visitors in Dubai.

Update: Other transportation projects in Dubai

A number of transportation projects have been planned for Dubai, including Air Taxis, which, according to His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA is set to launch in the final quarter of 2026.

Over the World Governments Summit, guests will have the opportunity to travel via driverless vehicles on designated routes. The self-driving taxis are expected to significantly improve road safety levels, as over 90 per cent of accidents are due to human errors. The vehicles are all-electric, environmentally friendly, and capable of serving a wide range of clients from different community segments, including seniors and people of determination.

And of course, one of the UAE’s most ambitious travel projects is the Etihad Rail network. The massive project will link the seven emirates together but has plans for future ambitions that extend beyond our borders into the rest of the GCC.  The project’s development is right on track, and we’ll be on board with you all the way to the end of the line.
