Pet registration becomes a mandatory requirement in the UAE capital this week, with fines in place for those who fail to register their animals

Pet owners, take note: pet registration becomes a mandatory requirement in Abu Dhabi this week. From Tuesday February 3, pet owners in Abu Dhabi are required to register all cats and dogs as the UAE capital continues its efforts to better support animal welfare.

The reminder was issued via the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipality and Transport over the weekend, with helpful guidance on how to register your pet.

How to register

Firstly, go to any registered veterinary clinic to complete the registration.

You’ll need your pet microchip, passport and your Emirates ID.

There, you’ll be able to complete the registration via the TAMM platform.

And that’s it, you’re all set. Once your pet is registered, you’ll be able to manage their profile and details on the “Family Space” section on the TAMM app.

How much does it cost?

Registration is free, with fines of Dhs1,000 in place for unregistered animals, and Dhs500 for those that fail to renew.

First unveiled in February 2025, the new pet registration scheme aims to improve animal welfare and reduce the number of animal abandonments in the city.

Pet owners were advised of a one-year grace period to sign up, while pet shops and animal shelters have been given six months to register.
